Applying for CCB Scholarships
The following are some suggestions on how to approach writing the materials that are requested in the applications.
Dr. Thomas Whaley Endowed Memorial Scholarship:
The research plan:
This document should describe the research project you plan to work on over the summer. You are encouraged to develop it with guidance from your research advisor. If you do not yet have a research advisor, you can reach out to faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology to ask about potential opportunities in their research groups.
In your statement, explain the problem you are interested in studying, why it matters, and what kinds of experiments or approaches you expect to work on over the summer. The goal is to show that you understand the project and are excited to learn more, not that you already know all the details.
The faculty support statement:
This document should be a brief letter from your research advisor confirming their support for the proposed project and your participation in their research group.
Your resume/CV:
A summary of your academic background and relevant experiences.
Your unofficial transcript:
A downloaded unofficial copy of your transcript is sufficient.
Other CCB Scholarships
Description of your professional goals and career path:
Describe your current academic and professional interests and any career paths you are considering. This may include short-term goals, such as classes, research, or internships, as well as longer-term possibilities. You do not need to have a finalized plan. The purpose of this statement is to help the review committee understand your interests, motivations, and how these opportunities fit into your broader academic or professional development.
Description of chemistry research area or project of interest:
This statement is similar in spirit to the previous one, but should focus on chemistry or chemical biology. You might discuss a class you particularly enjoyed or a project you worked on that you found interesting. Again, the purpose of this statement is to help the review committee get to know a bit more about you and your interests.
