Radiation Safety
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology uses radioactive materials in selected research laboratories. Work with radioactive materials is strictly regulated and may only be conducted by authorized personnel who have completed the required training and work under an approved radiation use authorization.
The University of New Mexico Radiation Safety Office oversees the University's radiation protection program to help ensure the safe use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials while protecting researchers, the public, and the environment.
Who Needs Radiation Safety Training?
Radiation safety training is required for individuals who:
- Work directly with radioactive materials.
- Use radiation-producing equipment.
- Work under an approved radiation use authorization.
- Perform duties requiring radiation monitoring or dosimetry.
If you are unsure whether radiation safety training is required for your work, consult your Principal Investigator (PI), supervisor, or the Department Safety Coordinator before beginning work.
Radiation Safety Responsibilities
Authorized users are expected to:
- Complete all required radiation safety training before beginning work.
- Follow approved laboratory procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and dosimetry, when applicable.
- Secure radioactive materials and maintain proper labeling.
- Minimize radiation exposure by following the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle.
- Report spills, exposures, lost materials, or other radiation incidents immediately.
Radiation Emergencies
If a spill, exposure, or other radiation-related emergency occurs:
- Stop work if it is safe to do so.
- Warn others and prevent access to the affected area.
- Follow laboratory emergency procedures.
- Notify your supervisor and the Radiation Safety Office immediately.
- Report the incident through the department's Incident Reporting process.
Do not attempt to clean up radioactive contamination unless you have received appropriate training and are authorized to do so.
Additional Resources
Additional guidance, training information, permit requirements, and the Radiation Safety Manual are available through the UNM Radiation Safety Office..
