Biosafety

Biological safety is an essential part of maintaining a safe research environment. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology conducts biological research in designated Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories. These laboratories are designed for work with well-characterized biological materials that present minimal risk to healthy adults when handled using standard microbiological practices. Department BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories are inspected annually by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and internally inspected each quarter to help ensure continued compliance and safe laboratory operations.

Before Working in a Biosafety Laboratory

Researchers working in BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories must:

  • Complete all required biosafety training before beginning work.
  • Follow laboratory-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Know the location and proper use of emergency equipment.
  • Report spills, exposures, or other incidents promptly.

Biological Spill Response

If a biological spill occurs:

  • Stop work and assess the situation.
  • Notify others in the area if assistance is needed.
  • Follow the appropriate spill response procedure.
  • Report exposures or incidents to your supervisor and the Safety Coordinator.

Additional Resources

Some biological research activities require review and approval by UNM's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and oversight through the University Biosafety Program. If your research involves recombinant DNA, infectious agents, human materials, or other regulated biological materials, contact the UNM Biosafety Office before beginning work.
