Safety Team
Department Safety Team
The Department Safety Team is a collaborative group of faculty, staff, and student representatives who work together to promote a safe, healthy, and productive learning and research environment throughout the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
Each research group and major operational area is represented, ensuring that safety concerns, ideas, and best practices can be shared across the department. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the Safety Team helps identify opportunities for improvement, strengthen communication, and foster a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.
Our team meets regularly to:
Review incidents, near misses, and lessons learned.
Identify hazards and recommend practical solutions.
Improve safety procedures, training, and communication.
Support laboratory inspections and continuous improvement efforts.
Encourage proactive reporting and shared responsibility for safety.
Our goal is to move beyond compliance by creating a department where safety is integrated into every aspect of teaching, research, and daily operations. We believe that open communication, collaboration, and continuous learning are the foundation of an excellent safety culture.
If you have questions, suggestions, or would like to become involved with the Safety Team, please contact Safety Coordinator Kali Levsen at klevsen@unm.edu.
Safety is a shared responsibility. Every member of our department has the authority and responsibility to identify hazards, ask questions, stop unsafe work, and help create a safer research environment.
