Undergraduate Advisement

Faculty Mentors

Upon entering a Chemistry degree program, students will be assigned to a faculty mentor. Students are encouraged to speak with faculty mentor regarding possible career paths in the chemical sciences. This includes but, is not limited to,

  • Career-orientated questions such as "which classes should I take if I want to be a doctor?" or "How do I study better?", or "How hard is this class?", or "What background should I have for this class?", etc. Basically, advice where the greater experience of faculty members is helpful.
  • Research opportunities

For questions about the Faculty Mentor Program, please contact the coordinator, Dr. D. Habel-Rodriguez at dianah@unm.edu

The undergraduate chemistry advisors are available to current and prospective students interested in majoring or minoring in Chemistry or Chemical Biology.  The undergraduate advisors are located in The Science Math & Learning Center (SMLC), building 14 on the Campus Map

A NOTE ON WORKSHOPS AND ORIENTATIONS:

If you have a hold for Graduation Planning or New Student Learning Workshops, you will receive more information about how to resolve this hold via email. If you have a Department Orientation hold, your advisor will contact you about how to resolve that during the semester. Please monitor your UNM email for updates.

Department Orientations

Orientations will be held each semester before the registration is open (November & April) by the Chemistry Undergraduate Advisors. Department Orientation is required for students who have recently transitioned from pre-major to full major status. This orientation will cover university requirements, major and minor requirements, UNM resources, and introduce students to the many opportunities within the department. This information will be sent to students sometime after the 4th week of every semester. For more information, please contact Chemistry Advisors (chemadvise@unm.edu).

We are here for you and we look forward to speaking with you soon!
