Fire Prevention
Fire prevention is everyone's responsibility. Good housekeeping, proper chemical storage, safe laboratory practices, and awareness of emergency procedures help protect people, research, and facilities.
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology works closely with the UNM Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Fire Safety Division to promote fire safety and ensure compliance with University policies and applicable fire codes. The EHS Fire Safety Division provides campus-wide fire prevention services, including fire extinguisher maintenance, fire alarm testing, fire safety inspections, and fire safety training.
In Our Laboratories
Help prevent fires by:
- Keeping exits, aisles, and emergency equipment clear.
- Properly storing flammable and combustible materials.
- Keeping laboratory work areas clean and organized.
- Using heat-producing equipment according to approved procedures.
- Keeping ignition sources away from flammable vapors.
- Knowing the location of exits, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers.
If a Fire Alarm Sounds
- Stop work immediately if it is safe to do so.
- Secure hazardous operations only if it can be done quickly and safely.
- Leave the building using the nearest safe exit.
- Do not use elevators.
- Proceed to your laboratory's designated assembly area.
- Do not re-enter the building until authorized to do so.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are provided throughout the building and are inspected and maintained by the UNM EHS Fire Safety Division.
Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if:
- The fire is very small and contained.
- You have been trained to use a fire extinguisher.
- You have a clear exit behind you.
- You can safely extinguish the fire without putting yourself or others at risk.
If there is any doubt, evacuate immediately and call 911.
