Profile: Dr. Ana de Bettencourt Dias graduated from Licenciatura in 1993 from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. She then attended Dr. rer. nat. and graduated in 1997, magna cum laude from the University of Cologne, Germany. Finally, she served as a Gulbenkian Postdoctoral Fellow from 1998 to 2001 at the University of California, Davis.
Her group is interested in developing new ligands for highly emissive lanthanide ion complexes. They synthesize the ligands and the metal complexes and then characterize with different spectroscopic methods, such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, and absorption, excitation and emission spectroscopy. The ligands targeted are organic or transition metal complexes. Emission is pursued for several different lanthanide ions, with emission in the visible or the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
