Congratulations to the Rack and Qin Groups

The Rack and Qin groups, in collaboration with researchers from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Brandeis University, have recently published an article in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), "Roller-Wheel-Type Pt-Containing Small Molecules and the Impact of Rollers on Material Crystallinity, Electronic Properties and Solar Cell Performance".

The article describes an unconventional structural design that resulted in Pt-containing conjugated molecules with enhanced crystallinity and long-lived triplet excitons. “Roller-wheel"-type platinum-containing small molecules (RWPt) are created by attaching platinum-bisacetylide moieties to the short axis of linear conjugated chromophores. These RWPts adopt a “slip-stack” packing motif in the solid state, leading to improved organic solar cell performance compared with conventional “dumbbell”-shaped Pt-containing molecules. The RWPts also improve fundamental understanding of the intricate interplays among molecular structure, photophysical behavior, solid-state morphology and device performance.
