In the latest issue of Science, Postdoctoral fellow Bin Jiang and Prof. Hua Guo published their work on the dissociative chemisorption of water on a metal surface, in collaboration with experimentalists in Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland. This work deals with the rate limiting step in the steam reforming of methane, which is a major industrial process for generating hydrogen. The joint theory-experiment work found that deposit energy in the vibration of water is more effective than putting energy in the translational degree of freedom, thus providing key insight into the reaction dynamics of this important heterogeneous catalysis process.
