General Chemistry Laboratory at UNM

Welcome to Chem 123L & 124L

CHEM 123L:

This is the first semester of general chemistry lab. This lab is required to be taken with the lecture (CHEM 121) in the same semester.  You will earn a letter grade from this lab for one credit hour. If you fail the lab, you will need to retake it. Without passing this lab, you will not be able to take the second semester's general chemistry (CHEM 122 and CHEM 124L).

This lab will cover the topics:

  • Basic Lab Techniques in transferring solid and liquid chemicals, volumetric measurements, lab safety, basic statistics, molarity, dilutions, and making solutions.
  • Density and Calibration
  • Avogadro's Number
  • Reaction Stoichiometry
  • Chemical Reactions
  • Atomic Emissions
  • Molecular Spectra
  • Lewis Structure and VSEPR models
  • Enthlapy of Reactions
  • Entropy of Reactions

CHEM 124L:

This is the second semester of general chemistry lab. This lab is also required to be taken with the CHEM 122. Without passing this lab, even you pass the CHEM 122, you will not be able to take the next course that requires CHEM 122 and CHEM 124L.

This lab will cover the topics:

  • Intermolecular forces of Protein Structures
  • Colligative Properties
  • Molar volume of Gases
  • Reaction Rate Laws
  • The Temperature and Solvent Effects on the Rate of a Raection
  • LeChatelier's Principle
  • Titration of an Unknown Acid
  • Solubility and Solubility Product Constant
  • Preparation of Buffer Solutions and Buffer Capacity
  • Measurements of Cell Potential of Voltaic Cells
