A Campaign for Chemistry
Scientists need tools. Learning through practical experience
is a fundamental principle of laboratory instruction. Scientific
learning - which constantly changes - demands equipment and tools
that utilize current technologies. In response to our growing need f
or undergraduate educational resources, the University of New Mexico
Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology has designed the "Elements of Success: A
Campaign for Chemistry."
The Goal
The goal of Elements of Success is to raise $100,000 or more
to create an endowment that will produce a revenue stream for
the purchase of undergraduate educational tools for the 1,000
freshman chemistry students, 800 organic chemistry students,
and 100 declared majors that the department serves each year.
These tools will take many forms, including computer hardware
and software, laboratory instrumentation, chemicals, glassware
or other exotic components and multimedia teaching materials.
An Enduring Solution for a Changing Need
Chemistry is changing rapidly. Much of the manual manipulation
in use a decade ago has been supplanted by instrumental methods.
The department must upgrade the practical, experiential component
of our program to produce graduates of maximum value to their
employers -- which range from chemical industries to environmental
organizations, forensics laboratories, pharma- ceutical companies,
and other consumer-related areas.
Only an endowed fund can guarantee resources for changing needs
in perpetuity. By spending only a portion of the income each year
and returning the rest to the principal, the department will ensure
that the fund will keep pace with inflation and provide an enduring
solution to the problem of purchasing state-of-the-art educational
tools.
